After about three years we get 6 new songs from Theory of a Deadman. Worth the wait? I think so. Catchy riffs and rock tunes with a pinch of humor, cynism and badass-ism. This album tries to be 100% hard-core American but at the same time it pokes fun at America. It is a nice conundrum, you’re left wondering. Somehow it works.
This is not a groundbreaking album but it is exactly what it should be. A rock album is all about energy and attitude. This has got some attitude. Although a lot of it seems to be tongue in cheek.
Sound and production
The album sounds good. It is a dense wall of sound with a lot of guitar but it never becomes muddy or too dense. The mix is very good and drums always stand out where you expect them. Guitars are clear and dense. Vocals cut through the mix. Good production.
Track by track
1. Barricade
The opener begins with a short riff and announces what we can expect. A good opener track with thundering drums, I love a good deep tom. And just as you think ‘I know what comes next’, you are surprised by a very strong bridge and a strong ending.
2. Funeral Song
This track starts off with a great pipe organ piece. Followed by the opening lyrics.
This is your funeral song.

Alright. This is Alice Cooper territory, dark humor and in a very catchy melody. You won’t believe that you want to sing along…
You won’t see me cryyyyyy at your
funeral. No you won’t be missed at all, its true…
3. Winnebago (Lay Low)
This is a song that leans over to the country genre but it fits the EP. The guitar solo is really nice and the groove keeps your head bopping. I can’t let go of the impression that they are poking fun of people living in a mobile home or a trailer park. Maybe I’m wrong.
4. Monster Truck
Another truck where they poke fun at America and its monster trucks. This is the sound of America. Followed by: my ears are ringing from the sound of America. Well, now I’m certain: this is highly critical of society in America. Again delivered in a very catchy tune that will be appreciated by the same people it criticizes.
5. Deep End
This song takes a different turn. It is not cyncical no humor. It is a nice ballad about breaking up or saying goodbye. This is not a very special song but on this album it stands out. Great vocals.
6. Prenup
The previous song touched upon the emotional aspects of a break-up. This song touches on the practical side of the break-up. This song is about a guy who regrets not getting a prenup because he is getting clear out by his ex-wife and her divorce lawyer. Again a funny song and a nice contrast with the previous song… A very strong guitar solo closes this album with a fade… for me the solo could have lasted at least 2 more minutes.
All in all a fun EP to listen to. I played it around 5 times now. I’m not sure how long this will stay in rotation.
